Call for Papers

The Centre for Scottish and Celtic Studies is establishing an annual postgraduate summer conference. The conference will include key-note presentations from early career researchers, thematic panels of post-graduate papers and Q&A sessions. The aim is to promote and support post-graduate student engagement with contemporary social, political and economic debate; and to explore these issues within our own fields of research.

In choosing the theme ‘Conflict, Rebellion and Popular Protest’ we hope to reflect on the physical, literary, linguistic and historical role of freedom and opposition within Scotland and the wider Celtic world.

Our right to peacefully protest and the expression of freedom of speech are being widely debated across the globe, as events take place which challenge our understanding of those principles. How has our access to, or exclusion from, these basic freedoms affected our cultural consciousness? To what extent has challenge and dissent shaped our histories and languages? How have social mechanisms of control and suppression been overcome or succumbed to? Can we consider cultural and linguistic shifts as integral to identity formation and how have these events impacted our perceptions, interpretations and portrayals of the past? And what can we contribute as researchers in our own fields to these debates?

Post-graduate researchers from across the Arts and Humanities are invited to submit proposals considering any of these themes. Suggested topics include, but are not limited to:

● Colonialism and post-colonialism

● Contemporary narrative constructs

● Cultural memory ● Culture and language shifts ● Language, language policy, decline and revival ● Sex, gender and identity roles ● Social and class conflict ● Social justice and legislation ● Protest movements ● Race and racism

Submission Guidelines

Researchers can participate in this conference in two ways:

● 10-15-minute papers ● Research posters

These submissions will be sorted into thematic panels for the 10-15 minute papers and there will be an online gallery of the research posters available to view throughout the event. Poster submissions should outline the research topic and speak to their relevance in these debates. Please specify which you would prefer in your application.
